6" To 12" Tall Door Protection Plates
A kick plate is a type of protection plate constructed from aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, or brass and is typically 6 inches to 12 inches tall. Kick plates are ideal for virtually any type of door, metal or wood. Kick plates are recommended for any door that is succeptable to damage or abuse such as scuffs, scratches, or dents.
How To Order Commercial Door Kickplates
Finding the correct commercial grade kick plate may seem like an easy task, but with further investigation may prove to be a difficult one if you don't know the proper questions to ask.
What is the door width?
Your commercial door width will play a major role in what size kick plate can be outfitted on your door.
Is your door fire rated?
With little effort, thousands of kick plates can be found online. But did you know majority of the kickplates listed online are not fire rated and do not have UL certification. You might ask why this matters. If you are commercial building owner chances are you want to meet ANSI standards, proper fire code, and ADA compliance. Installing an inferior product which does not have these certifications can result in failed building and fire codes, resulting in you having to purchase a new compliant product. If you are not sure if your door is fire rated, simply open your door and look at the hinge side of the door. There should be a label with the fire rating.
What side of the door is the kick plate going to be installed on? The Push side or Pull side?
Depending on what side you plan to install the kick plate, will determine the proper width of the kick plate.
Kickplates Installed on the push side of the door:
For example, as a general rule of thumb if the kick plate is installed on the push side of the door then the proper width of the kick plate should be about 2" less than the total width of the door. This is important because the measurement takes into account the door frame's rabbet or profile. Too wide of a kick plate will hit the door frame's rabbet, causing the door not to close properly.
Kick plates Installed on the pull side of the door:
If your kick plate is installed on the pull side of the door, then the kick plate width is typically about 1-1/2" less than the total width of the door. This is because on the pull side of the door, the door frame's rabbet is not visible and is on the opposite side of the door frame, allowing for a wider surface to mount a kick plate.
Kick Plate ADA Compliance
In order to meet compliance ADA guidelines must be met. Compliance is required for doors, doorways, and gates providing user passage on accessible routes. At least one accessible door, doorway, or gate serving each accessible room, space, and entrance must comply. The ADA compliance section referencing door kick plates is section 404.2.10.
According to section 404.2.10 of the ADA guidelines a smooth surface is required at the bottom of the push side of the door. The smooth surface is atleast 10" off of the floor. This means that the door's kickplate must be atleast 10" high in order to meet ADA requirements.
404.2.10 Door and Gate Surfaces
Swinging door and gate surfaces within 10 inches (255 mm) of the finish floor or ground measured vertically shall have a smooth surface on the push side extending the full width of the door or gate. Parts creating horizontal or vertical joints in these surfaces shall be within 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) of the same plane as the other. Cavities created by added kick plates shall be capped.
1. Sliding doors shall not be required to comply with 404.2.10.
2. Tempered glass doors without stiles and having a bottom rail or shoe with the top leading edge tapered at 60 degrees minimum from the horizontal shall not be required to meet the 10 inch (255 mm) bottom smooth surface height requirement.
3. Doors and gates that do not extend to within 10 incDC USA Approved (255 mm) of the finish floor or ground shall not be required to comply with 404.2.10.
4. Existing doors and gates without smooth surfaces within 10 incDC USA Approved (255 mm) of the finish floor or ground shall not be required to provide smooth surfaces complying with 404.2.10 provided that if added kick plates are installed, cavities created by such kick plates are capped
How To Install Kick Plates
Account For All Material:
Once you received your order of kick plates, it's time for installation. You should have received the proper kick plate size. If you are unsure please read our "How To Order Kick Plate" page or our Kickplate Search Tool. Check the kick plate carefully. It should be outfitted with a protective sticker/film. Before removing the protective layer, hold up the kickplate to your door, to confirm it will fit. Locate the hardware pack that came with the kick plate.
Prep For Installation:
For installation we always recommend removing the door and setting it on the floor or saw horses. The reason for this is that it makes installation much easier. However, if you are a skilled craftsman, you can mount the kick plate on a hung door. Line the kick plate up with the door. We recommend using a tape measure and pencil to carefully mark the placement of the kickplate. Remember to meet ADA guidelines, the kick plate should be installed on the push side of the door and be atleast 10" tall. For kickplate ADA compliance you can learn more here.
Installing the Kick Plate:
Once the kick plate is in the proper position, use the fasteners that came with the kick plate to attach it to the door. Once installed rehang the door if the door was removed for installation. Open and close the door, to make sure the kick plate is in the proper position and does not hit the door frame. The last step of installation is to remove the protective layer from the kick plate.

1. Periodically check the fasteners and tighten if necessary. The fasteners should not loosen regularly; if they do, there is an installation problem that should be resolved.
2. Clean the product routinely by following the cleaning instructions below.
