How to Adjust a Commercial Door Closer (Sweep, Latch & Backcheck)

Hey guys, this is Gary with Door Closers USA. In today’s video, we’re going to go overhow to properly adjust a commercial door closer after installation.

We’ll cover how to adjust:

  • Main closing (sweep) speed
  • Latch speed
  • Backcheck
  • Spring power (overview)

These adjustments are critical for safety, performance, and code compliance.

Understanding Door Closer Speed Zones

For adjustment purposes, we’ll assume the door opens to 90°.

  • Sweep speed: From full open (90°) to about 10° before closing
  • Latch speed: The final 10° before the door fully closes

Most door closers clearly label these valves:

  • S = Sweep speed
  • L = Latch speed

Recommended Closing Speed (Safety First)

As a general rule of thumb, the door should take a minimum of6 seconds to close from full open to fully closed.

Always follow the most current ANSI standards and local code requirements. If the door is used by children or people with accessibility needs, slower is perfectly acceptable and often preferred.

Adjusting the Sweep Speed

The sweep speed controls the main closing motion of the door.

To slow the door down:

  • Locate the valve labeled S
  • Turn the valve clockwise to restrict hydraulic flow
  • Adjust in 1/8 to 1/4 turn increments only

After each adjustment, cycle the door several times to verify the speed.

Adjusting the Latch Speed

The latch speed controls the final few inches of closing. If this is too fast, the door can slam shut and create a pinch hazard.

To slow the latch speed:

  • Locate the valve labeled L
  • Turn clockwise in small increments

Ideally, the door should gently “creep” into the closed position without slamming.

Door Size & Spring Power Overview

Most commercial door closers ship preset for a36 in exterior door, which is the industry standard.

If you notice the door does not have enough force to close completely—especially onlarger or heavier doors—you may need to adjust the spring power.

The spring power adjustment is typically an Allen bolt located near the backcheck valve.

Always refer to the manufacturer’s power adjustment chart. It will tell you exactly how many turns are required based on door width and weight.

Adjusting the Backcheck

Backcheck controls the resistance during the last portion of opening. It acts as a cushion to prevent the door from being thrown open violently.

This is especially important on storefront doors where wind can:

  • Slam the door into walls
  • Shatter glass
  • Damage pivots, frames, and hardware

To adjust backcheck:

  • Tighten the backcheck valve slightly to add cushioning
  • Test the door and feel for resistance near full open

Do not overtighten. If the door stops completely or becomes very hard to open, you risk blowing seals or damaging the closer.

Backcheck is a cushion—not a full open stop.Always use a physical wall stop or door stop.

Important Adjustment Warnings

  • Never adjust valves more than 1/4 turn at a time
  • Never completely remove a speed regulation valve
  • Unscrewing too far can cause hydraulic fluid to leak out

If hydraulic fluid leaks out, the door closer is permanently damaged and must be replaced.

Final Check

After all adjustments:

  • Door closes in 6+ seconds
  • No slamming at latch
  • Smooth cushioned opening
  • Consistent operation cycle after cycle

This example shows a top jamb mounted door closer, which is the most common configuration on aluminum storefront doors.

Parallel arm installations are also used on storefront doors and will be covered in a future video.
