What Is A Cylindrical Door Lock?

A Cylindrical Door Lock, What Is It?

A cylindrical door lock commonly found on commercial steel doors and wood doors. It is comprised of a chassis, interior lever handle, exterior lever handle, latchbolt mechanism, and strike plate. The term “cylindrical” is commonly used because the door has a cylindrical hole bored through it where the door lock installs. This hole is known as the face bore. Perpendicular to the face bore hole is a cutaway in the door where the lock’s latchbolt mechanism is mortised into the door. This cutaway is known as the edge bore.

How It Works

A cylindrical door lock works using an internal springs within the latch bolt mechanism. The lever handles are connected perependicular to the lachbolt with a square cut spindle. When the cylindrical lock is unlocked, the lever can rotate in the clockwise direction. As the lever rotates, it’s spindle rotates, compressing the spring inside of the latchbolt, causing the latch to retract. This allows the door to swing freely open since the latch is fully retracted and no longer engaged into the strike plate.

Cylindrical Lock Applications

Cylindrical locks are the most commonly used lock type for commercial steel doors such as hollow metal doors and commercial wood doors. There are a variety of lock functions available for cylindrical locks depending on the door application. For example, entrance function door locks are commonly used for security door applications such as front entrance doors, where a key is needed to unlock the outside lever, or a turn button on the inside lever can unlock the outside lever. Other functions such as privacy is commonly used for bathroom applications. For more information on cylindrical lock functions, please see our article on Cylindrical Lock Functions.

Certification

Most cylindrical locks are grade 2, meaning that they have been tested by ANSI and have completed 400,000 cycles. Grade 1 cylindrical locks have been tested to complete 800,000 cycles. Factors such as how often the door is used helps determine whether a grade 1 or 2 cylindrical lock should be used.
