How to Adjust a Concealed Door Closer on a Double Acting Storefront Door

Hey guys, Gary here with Door Closers USA. In today’s video, I’m going to show you how tofully adjust a concealed door closer on a double acting storefront door.This guide applies to center-hung aluminum storefront doors that swing in both directions.

What Is a Double Acting Storefront Door?

A double acting storefront door is designed to swing both inward and outward.This is possible because the door is center-hung and uses anoverhead concealed door closer.

These doors are ideal for high-traffic environments because they allow smooth,two-way operation without exposed surface-mounted door closers.

Spring Force Adjustment

On Alumitrix double acting storefront doors, the concealed closer includes anadjustable spring force.

Most standard 36 in storefront doors come factory set atspring size 3, which is ideal for that door width.

If you need to adjust the spring force:

• Turn the spring adjustment nut clockwise to increase power
• Turn it counterclockwise to decrease power
• Each spring size change typically requires several full turns

Always reference the installation manual for the exact number of turns per spring size.

Checking Initial Door Operation

Before making adjustments, fully open the door to approximately 90° and observehow it closes.

The goal is:

• 4 to 6 seconds from full open to the latch zone
• A slow, controlled latch at the final closing stage

Main Closing Speed Adjustment

The main closing speed controls the door from the full open positionto about 10° before closing.

To adjust:

• Locate the main closing speed valve
• Turn clockwise to slow the door
• Turn counterclockwise to speed it up
• Adjust in small increments (1/8 to 1/4 turn at a time)

Cycle the door several times after each adjustment to verify the change.

Latch Speed Adjustment

The latch speed controls the final 10° of door travel before fully closing.

A fast latch can be dangerous, so it’s important to slow this down for safety.

• Locate the latching speed valve
• Turn clockwise to slow the latch
• Turn counterclockwise to increase latch speed

The door should gently close without slamming or pinching fingers.

Safety and Code Considerations

Always follow current ANSI standards and local building codes when adjustingdoor closers.

As a general rule:

• 4–6 seconds to the latch zone
• Slow, controlled final latch
• No slamming or sudden acceleration

These adjustments are especially important in buildings with children,elderly occupants, or accessibility requirements.
