Hey, this is Gary with Door Closers USA. In this guide, I’m going to show you how to install avinyl door sweep on a commercial steel or hollow metal door. This is a great solution when you have a large gap under the door—especially when the slab sits higheroff the floor or threshold.
On commercial openings, you don’t want the door bottom dragging hard on the threshold. Instead, you want aflexible sealing surface that makes contact and closes the gap. That’s exactly what a vinyl door sweepis designed to do.
For this install, we’re using an aluminum + vinyl flange-style sweep that mounts to theface of the door. These work extremely well on hollow metal doors because they’readjustable and can handle uneven floors.
Close the door and hold the sweep up against the bottom of the door. Press it down until the vinyl flexes andseals the gap underneath. You want firm contact, but not so much pressure that the door binds.
Instead of trying to hold the sweep with one hand, use painter’s tape or masking tape to temporarilyhold the sweep in position. This keeps it exactly where you want it while you mark your holes.
Once it’s taped in place, mark your screw locations through the slotted holes in the sweep. The slots are important because they allow vertical adjustment later.
Remove the sweep and pre-drill your holes. On a hollow metal or steel door, take your time and usethe correct drill bit—let the bit do the work.
Reinstall the sweep and fasten it using self-tapping screws (recommended/required for steel doors).Start the screws in the center of the slots, not the top or bottom, so you have room to adjust thesweep up or down if needed.
Tighten the screws just enough to hold the sweep securely—don’t overtighten and crush the vinyl. Then open andclose the door a few times. You should feel slight resistance, but the door should still operatesmoothly. If needed, loosen the screws and fine-tune the position using the slots.
This type of sweep is ideal for commercial steel and hollow metal doors because it helps seal outair, light, water, pests, and noise without relying on the door bottom rubbing the floor.
