How To Install A Brush Door Sweep On A Commercial Steel / Hollow Metal Door

In this guide, I’m going to show you how to install abrush door sweep on a commercial steel or hollow metal door.Brush sweeps are ideal when you need to seal uneven floors, rough concrete, exterior thresholds,or situations where flexibility and durability are critical.

Unlike vinyl blade sweeps, a brush sweep uses dense nylon bristles that lightly contact thefloor or threshold. This allows the door to operate smoothly while still sealing outair, dust, insects, light, and debris.

What Type of Sweep This Guide Covers

For this install, we’re using an aluminum carrier with nylon brush insertthat mounts to the face of the door. These are extremely common oncommercial hollow metal doors because they:

• Handle uneven floors better than solid vinyl blades
• Reduce drag during door operation
• Last longer in exterior applications
• Provide consistent sealing without binding

Step-By-Step Installation

Step 1 - Measure the door and cut the sweep to length

Measure the exact width of the door slab. Transfer that measurement to the aluminumbrush sweep and cut it to size using a hacksaw or appropriate cutting tool.Be sure to make a clean, straight cut so the sweep sits flush against the door edge.

Step 2 - Position and align the brush sweep

Close the door and hold the sweep against the bottom of the door.The brush bristles should lightly contact the floor or threshold.You want the bristles to bend slightly—not be crushed.

Step 3 - Tape in place and mark your holes

Use painter’s tape or masking tape to temporarily hold the sweep in position.Once aligned properly, mark your screw locations through theslotted mounting holes.These slots allow for vertical adjustment after installation.

Step 4 - Pre-drill and secure with self-tapping screws

Remove the sweep and pre-drill your holes into the hollow metal door.Reposition the sweep and secure it using self-tapping screws,which are required for steel doors.Start your screws in the center of the slots to allow adjustment if needed.

Final Adjustment

Open and close the door several times. The brush should lightly sweep the surfacewithout causing excessive drag. If necessary, loosen the screws slightly and adjustthe height using the slotted holes.
