How Do You Install a Hollow Metal Door Frame? | Step-by-Step Guide (Wood Stud, Steel Stud, CMU, Existing Openings)

How Do You Install a Hollow Metal Door Frame?

This step-by-step guide covers new construction (wood/steel stud), CMU/masonry, and existing drywall openings using punch & dimple or KD/slip-on frames. You’ll learn tools, anchor types, plumb/level/square checks, and fire door clearance rules.

Before You Start: Verify & Prep

Tools & Supplies

  • 6' level, torpedo level, laser (optional)
  • Measuring tape, carpenter’s square
  • Shims (composite/hardwood), wedges
  • Impact driver/drill, bits, anchors/fasteners per wall type
  • Framing screws or sleeve/expansion anchors (masonry)
  • Construction adhesive (as specified), setting spreaders
  • Hammer, punch, clamps, self-tapping screws (steel stud)
  • Backer rod & sealant for perimeter (as specified)

Verify Opening & Components

  • Confirm handing, size, and wall thickness match submittals.
  • Check frame type: welded, KD/slip-on, or punch & dimple for existing openings.
  • Lay out hinge/strike/closer reinforcements and hardware locations.
  • For rated openings, confirm UL/WHI labels on door and frame.
  • Inspect opening for square: diagonals within ≤ 1/8" over 8' if possible.

Clearances (typical): 1/8" between door and frame at jambs/head; undercut ≤ 3/4" above floor (≤ 3/8" above a threshold) for fire doors. Always follow the project specs and label requirements.

Frame Anchor Types (Choose by Wall Type)

Wall TypeCommon AnchorsNotes
New wood stud drywallWood stud T-anchors, strap anchors, compression anchorsAttach to king/jack studs; shim behind anchors to keep jambs plumb.
New steel stud drywallSteel stud anchors, compression anchors, self-tapping screwsUse #8–#10 self-tappers; verify gauge of studs; add blocking if required.
CMU / masonryWire masonry anchors, T-anchors, expansion/sleeve anchorsSet with spreaders and brace; grout/pack per spec if required.
Existing drywall openingPunch & dimple frame w/ existing-opening anchors & wood screwsTip-in method; uses oversized screws through dimples into studs.
Existing masonry openingDrill-in sleeve anchors through frameShim, pre-drill, set anchors; avoid pulling jambs out of plumb.

Install: New Construction (Welded Frame)

  1. Dry fit the welded frame in the rough opening. Set temporary spreaders at the head and near the floor to keep throat dimension.
  2. Plumb the hinge jamb first. Shim at anchor points until bubble/laser is true; fasten anchor to stud/blocking (wood/steel) or brace for masonry.
  3. Level the head, then plumb the strike jamb. Maintain equal reveals at the rabbet.
  4. Anchor sequence: start at hinge middle, then top/bottom; check plumb each time. Repeat for strike side.
  5. For CMU: brace, set wire/T-anchors in joints as you lay block, or drill/set sleeve anchors after; keep frame square (measure diagonals).
  6. Set the door on three hinges (or pivots). Verify 1/8" margins at head and jambs; adjust shims/anchors as needed.
  7. Seal the perimeter per spec; install silencers and hardware reinforcements.

Install: KD / Slip-On Frame (Existing or New Drywall)

  1. Assemble the KD frame (heads into jambs) on a flat surface; protect finished faces.
  2. Slip the frame over the finished drywall at the opening; set temporary spreaders to maintain throat.
  3. Plumb the hinge jamb; use compression anchors or screws through factory punchings to studs. Shim behind anchors.
  4. Level head and plumb strike jamb; set remaining anchors from top to bottom, checking reveal.
  5. Install door and verify margins; adjust compression anchors until swing is smooth with no bind.
  6. Caulk perimeter as specified; install silencers and hardware.

Install: Punch & Dimple Frame (Existing Drywall Opening)

Tip-in retrofit frame for existing stud/drywall without removing the wall. Great for quick replacements.

  1. Dry fit the welded/dimpled frame into the existing opening.
  2. Plumb the hinge jamb and pre-drill pilot holes at dimples into framing.
  3. Set large wood screws through dimples; do not over-tighten. Shim where needed to keep jamb straight.
  4. Level head, then secure the strike jamb the same way.
  5. Hang the door, confirm 1/8" margins, and fine-tune screw tension to eliminate bind.
  6. Seal the perimeter and install hardware.

Our retrofit frames ship welded and dimpled. Large wood screws are supplied for easy tip-in installation.

Plumb, Level, Square — What to Check

  • Plumb both jambs in and out of plane.
  • Level the head in both directions.
  • Square by measuring diagonals of the frame opening; they should match within tolerance.
  • Reveals: uniform rabbet gap; typical 1/8" at head/jamb.
  • Latch alignment: lock/latch strikes cleanly without lifting or pushing the leaf.

Fire door openings: Maintain listed hardware, door, and frame combination. Clearances not to exceed 1/8" at head/jambs and 3/4" at floor (3/8" over a threshold). Labels must remain visible and intact.

Troubleshooting & Pro Tips

  • Door rubs at head (latch side): Raise strike jamb head with a shim; re-check head level.
  • Door won’t latch: Move strike jamb slightly toward the leaf with controlled shim/screw adjustment.
  • Twist in jamb: Add opposing shims mid-height; check with a long level.
  • Heavy doors: Confirm hinge count (often 4 on tall/heavy), Grade 1 closer sizing, and reinforced anchors.
  • Exteriors: Specify galvannealed steel frames and add proper weatherstripping/thresholds.

FAQs

Should I shim behind every anchor point?

Shim wherever tightening a fastener would pull the jamb out of plumb or twist the frame. Typical locations are near hinge locations and opposite latch.

What undercut should I use?

Common undercuts are 3/4" above finished floor, or 3/8" over a threshold for fire doors. Always follow the project spec and any label limitations.

Can I reuse an existing frame?

Yes, if it’s square, plumb, and structurally sound. Our punch & dimple retrofit frames are designed to fit existing drywall openings with minimal demolition.
