A Step By Step Guide On How To Install A Storefront Door Slide Block Arm and Track For An Overhead Concealed Closer
In this guide we explain how to install, remove, or replace a slide block arm for an overhead concealed closer.
Step 1: Remove Existing Slide Block Arm and Track
To do this open the door to the full open position. For hold open models this just means to set the door to hold open. For non-hold open models this can be done by opening the door to the full open position, then using a screw driver screw the close speed valve in all the way until the door stays in the full open position. The arm is attached to the closer spindle by an allen screw. Remove, the allen screw and pull the arm off of the concealed closer spindle. Next manually slide the slide block off of the channel so that the arm assembly can be removed. Remove the storefront door by using a screw driver to carefully depress the spring loaded pin from the offset top pivot assembly. If necessary remove the offset top pivot assembly by removing the screws from the door frame. Once the top pivot assembly has been removed the door can be lifted and removed off of the bottom offset pivot assembly. Carefully set the door on it's side in a safe location so that it can be worked on. Remove the channel from the top web of the door rail.
Step 2: Determine Type Of Slide Block Arm
If you don't know what type of slide block, offset arm, or slide track needed please see our help guide
here.
Step 3: Install New Offset Slide Arm, Track, and Block
Install the new channel into the storefront door's top rail.
Next secure the slide block onto the arm using the provided E-clip. Next, tilt the door up and set the bottom of the door on the bottom pivot. Carefully slide the arm and block into the channel.
Attach the slide arm onto the closer spindle. The door closer should still be in the full open position. Tilt the door in and attach the spring loaded top offset pivot pin into the receiving hole of the top offset pivot bearing. For additional information on removing or installing offset pivot hinges on storefront doors please see our guide
here.
Step 4: Check Door Operation
For hold open concealed closers disengage hold open so the door can close. For non-hold open models slowly unscrew the main closing speed valve an 1/8 of a turn at a time until the door begins closing. WARNING: Do not unscrew all the way as closer will leak oil and lose hydraulic pressure! Verify door operation is acceptable. For help on adjusting a storefront concealed door closer please see our guide
