Tools & Materials

  • YKK AP compatible surface door closer with arm set
  • Factory mounting template
  • Drill/driver with bits sized to supplied screws
  • Tape measure & square
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips/flat)
  • Allen/hex keys (valves & arm screws)
  • Fasteners or through-bolts (depending on top rail thickness)
  • Safety glasses & gloves

Step 1: Confirm Mount Type

Most YKK AP storefront glass doors use a top jamb mount for surface closers:

  • Closer body mounts to the frame header.
  • Arm shoe mounts to the door’s top rail.

Regular arm and parallel arm configurations are also possible, but top jamb is the most common for glass doors with narrow aluminum rails.

Step 2: Position & Mark Template

  1. Tape the factory template onto the frame header and door top rail.
  2. Align centerlines carefully — accurate marking ensures smooth closer action.
  3. Mark all fastener and spindle hole locations.

Step 3: Drill Pilot Holes

  1. Drill mounting holes into the frame header for the closer body.
  2. Drill holes in the door’s top rail for the arm shoe. Through-bolts are recommended on aluminum for strength.

Step 4: Mount the Closer Body

  1. Secure the closer body onto the header using all supplied screws or bolts.
  2. Ensure the valve side faces outward for easy access during adjustments.

Step 5: Install Arm Shoe & Main Arm

  1. Fasten the arm shoe to the YKK AP top rail at the template marks.
  2. Slide the main arm onto the closer spindle at the correct index angle (commonly 90° to the door line at rest).
  3. Connect the arm into the shoe and tighten all screws securely.

Step 6: Test Door Operation

  1. Open and close the door several times to check for smooth swing.
  2. Ensure the arm clears the frame and stop.
  3. Adjust arm preload if the motion feels off or uneven.

Step 7: Adjust Closing Speeds

  • Sweep valve: Controls speed from full open to about 15° before latch.
  • Latch valve: Controls the final 15° of closing for positive latch.
  • Backcheck (if equipped): Slows the door before it reaches full open to prevent impact damage.
Adjustment tip: Turn valves in small 1/8–1/4 turns and retest. Aim for smooth ADA-compliant closing that is firm but not slamming.

Step 8: Final Checks

  • Confirm door latches securely without slamming.
  • Verify all screws and bolts are tight.
  • Inspect frame clearances and weatherseal for even compression.
