Overview
This guide covers installing a surface door closer on an Arcadia storefront door using a top jamb configuration: closer body on the frame header, arm shoe on the door’s top rail. We’ll mark the template, mount the body, attach/index the arm, and tune sweep, latch, and backcheck for smooth, ADA-friendly closing.
Glass safety: Arcadia aluminum top rails surround glass. Use specified through-bolts where required and avoid over-tightening against thin sections.
Tools & Materials
- Arcadia-compatible surface closer (body + arm set)
- Factory mounting template (correct mount/hand)
- Drill/driver with bits per template
- Tape measure, combination square, fine-tip marker
- #2 Phillips and flat screwdrivers
- Allen/hex keys (valves and arm screws)
- Supplied screws and/or through-bolts
- Thread locker (medium strength)
- Ladder and PPE (gloves, eye protection)
- Optional: non-marring clamps for template
Pro tip: Verify door hand (RH/LH), reveal, header depth, and that your printed template is 100% scale before drilling.
Step 1: Confirm Mount Type
Top jamb is preferred for glass doors with narrow rails:
- Closer body → frame header (pull side).
- Arm shoe → door top rail (through-bolt if required).
Regular arm and parallel arm configurations are possible—use the matching template if you choose those.
Step 2: Position & Mark the Template
- Tape the template to the header and top rail per the mount and hand.
- Align centerlines and datum marks precisely; transfer spindle and screw hole locations.
- Double-check measurements before drilling.
Step 3: Drill Pilot Holes
- Drill the header holes for the closer body using the specified bit size and depth.
- Drill the top-rail holes for the arm shoe. Use through-bolts on thin rails for strength.
Step 4: Mount the Closer Body
- Secure the closer body to the header using all fasteners; apply thread locker if specified.
- Ensure the valve side is oriented for easy access during adjustment.
Step 5: Install Arm Shoe & Main Arm
- Attach the arm shoe to the Arcadia top rail at the template marks. Do not overtighten.
- Place the main arm onto the spindle at the indexed angle (commonly ~90° to the door line at rest).
- Connect the forearm into the shoe; set initial preload with the door closed; tighten all arm fasteners to spec.
Step 6: Function Test
- Open and close the door several times to verify smooth travel.
- Confirm the arm clears the frame, soffit, and stops through the full swing.
- Re-index the arm if the sweep feels tight or off-center.
Step 7: Adjustments & ADA Tuning
- Sweep speed: Full open to ~10–15° before latch. Clockwise slows, counter-clockwise speeds.
- Latch speed: Last 10–15° for positive latching without slam.
- Backcheck (if equipped): Cushions near full open to prevent impact.
- Delayed action (if equipped): Extends closing time through mid-swing for accessibility.
Adjustment tip: Make 1/8–1/4 turns, then test. Aim for a smooth, controlled close that latches firmly and meets ADA guidance.
Troubleshooting
- Slams at end: Reduce latch speed; verify arm preload and mounting tightness.
- Won’t latch: Increase latch speed slightly; check strike and weatherstrip drag.
- Oil leak: Replace the closer—seal failure is not field-repairable.
- Arm chatter/wobble: Tighten arm and shoe fasteners; confirm correct bracket/through-bolts.
- Contacts header/stop: Reduce opening angle or increase backcheck; verify spindle index per template.
Maintenance
- Re-check fasteners after 1–2 weeks, then every 6 months.
- Keep adjustment valves clean; do not substitute hydraulic fluid.
- Inspect hinges/pivots and thresholds that affect closing and latching force.
