Overview
This guide walks you through installing a surface-mounted door closer on a Kawneer commercial glass storefront door using a top jamb configuration. The steps cover template placement, mounting, arm setup, and final ADA-friendly adjustments. Notes are included for regular arm and parallel arm variations where applicable.
Glass safety: Kawneer doors use aluminum top rails around glass. Always verify rail thickness and use the manufacturer’s through-bolts or specified fasteners to prevent pull-out. Do not over-tighten against the glass.
Tools & Materials
- Closer body, arm set, and factory template
- Drill/driver with bits (per template)
- Tape measure, square, fine tip marker
- #2 Phillips and flat screwdriver set
- Allen/hex keys (for valves and arm screws)
- Through-bolts or self-drillers as specified
- Thread locker (medium strength)
- Ladder and PPE (gloves, eye protection)
- Non-marring clamps (optional for template)
Pro tip: Verify hand (RH/LH), reveal, header depth, and top-rail height. Confirm your template scale matches the closer model and mount type.
Preparation
- Secure the opening: Prop the door open safely. If using a wedge, protect the threshold and frame finish.
- Confirm mount: For glass storefronts, top jamb places the closer on the frame header and the arm shoe on the door’s top rail.
- Mark datum lines: Use the template’s centerlines to mark the spindle location and arm shoe position.
Installation — Top Jamb (Kawneer)
1) Position & Tape the Template
- Align the template on the frame header using reveal and centerline references.
- Transfer hole marks for the closer body. Double-check measurements before drilling.
2) Drill & Mount the Closer Body
- Drill pilot holes per template. Use the correct bit sizes and depths.
- Mount the closer body to the header. Use all fasteners; apply thread locker where specified.
- Orient the valve side as shown on the template for access after install.
Regular arm or parallel arm? Regular arm mounts the body on the door and shoe on the frame. Parallel arm flips the shoe to the underside of the header with a secondary bracket. Follow the correct template if using these alternates.
3) Install the Arm Shoe on the Door
- Position the arm shoe on the Kawneer top rail exactly at the template marks.
- Use through-bolts if specified for your top-rail thickness. Avoid overtightening to protect the glass.
4) Attach Main Arm & Set Preload
- Place the main arm on the closer spindle at the index angle shown on the template (often at approximately 90° to the door line when at rest).
- Connect the forearm to the shoe and loosely fasten.
- With the door closed, set the initial arm preload per instructions, then tighten arm screws to spec.
5) Test Swing & Clearances
- Open and close the door several times. Verify smooth travel and no header or frame interference.
- Confirm that the arm does not contact the frame face, glass, or weatherstrip throughout the swing.
Adjustments (Final Tuning)
- Sweep speed: Controls from fully open to about 10–15° before latch. Turn the valve clockwise to slow, counter-clockwise to speed up.
- Latch speed: Controls the last 10–15° for positive latching without slamming.
- Backcheck (if equipped): Adds resistance near full open to protect the door and frame from abrupt stops.
- Delayed action (if equipped): Slows closing through mid-swing to allow passage; useful for carts or accessibility.
ADA tip: Aim for a smooth, controlled close that latches firmly without a hard slam. Make micro-adjustments — 1/8 to 1/4 turn — then retest.
Troubleshooting
- Door slams: Decrease sweep and/or latch speeds incrementally; verify arm preload and that the closer body is solidly mounted.
- Door won’t latch: Increase latch speed slightly; check weatherstripping, strike alignment, and closing angle.
- Oil leak: Replace the closer. Leaking indicates seal failure.
- Arm chatter or wobble: Tighten arm and shoe screws; confirm through-bolts are correct for the Kawneer top rail.
- Hits header/stop: Reduce opening angle or adjust backcheck; confirm proper arm index on the spindle.
Maintenance
- Recheck fasteners after the first week of use, then every 6 months.
- Keep valves free of debris; do not substitute oil types.
- Inspect weatherstrips, hinges/pivots, and thresholds that affect closing force.
