Overview

This guide explains how to install a surface-mounted closer on a Vistawall storefront glass door using a top jamb configuration. The closer body mounts to the frame header, while the arm shoe mounts to the door’s top rail. We’ll cover template placement, drilling, mounting, arm installation, and adjustments for ADA compliance.

Safety note: Vistawall aluminum rails are thin and sit over glass panels. Always use specified through-bolts if required and avoid over-tightening to protect the glass.

Tools & Materials

  • Vistawall-compatible surface door closer with arm set
  • Factory template (correct for mount type and hand)
  • Drill/driver with bits sized to screws
  • Tape measure, square, and fine marker
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips/flat)
  • Allen/hex keys (for valves and arm screws)
  • Supplied screws or through-bolts
  • PPE: safety glasses and gloves
Pro tip: Double-check door hand (RH/LH) and confirm template scale is correct before drilling.

Step 1: Position & Mark the Template

  1. Align the template on the frame header and door’s top rail according to mount type.
  2. Mark all screw holes and the spindle location carefully.
  3. Check alignment twice before drilling.

Step 2: Drill Pilot Holes

  1. Drill header holes for mounting the closer body.
  2. Drill top-rail holes for the arm shoe. Use through-bolts if rail thickness requires it.

Step 3: Mount the Closer Body

  1. Secure the closer body onto the header using all fasteners.
  2. Ensure the valve side faces outward for easy access to speed adjustments.

Step 4: Install the Arm Shoe & Main Arm

  1. Attach the arm shoe to the Vistawall top rail at the template marks.
  2. Place the main arm onto the closer spindle at the proper index angle (usually 90° from door line).
  3. Connect the arm into the shoe and tighten screws securely.

Step 5: Test Door Swing

  1. Open and close the door several times.
  2. Confirm the arm clears the frame and door stop.
  3. If swing feels tight or uneven, adjust the arm preload.

Step 6: Adjust the Closer Valves

  • Sweep speed: Controls from fully open to about 15° before latch.
  • Latch speed: Controls the final 15° of closing for proper latch engagement.
  • Backcheck (if equipped): Cushions the door before it reaches full open.
Adjustment tip: Make small 1/8–1/4 turns and retest until the door closes smoothly and ADA compliant.

Step 7: Final Checks

  • Confirm door latches securely without slamming.
  • Verify all screws and bolts are tight.
  • Inspect clearances and weatherseals for even contact.
