Overview

This guide explains how to install a surface-mounted door closer on a Rebco storefront glass door in a top jamb configuration. You’ll learn how to mark the template, mount the closer body, connect and index the arm, and adjust sweep and latch speeds for smooth, ADA-compliant performance.

Safety reminder: Rebco doors use aluminum top rails around glass. Always use through-bolts if required and avoid over-tightening fasteners to prevent glass damage.

Tools & Materials

  • Rebco-compatible surface closer with arm set
  • Factory mounting template (specific to hand and mount type)
  • Drill/driver with bits for pilot holes
  • Tape measure, square, fine-tip marker
  • Screwdrivers (Phillips/flat)
  • Allen/hex keys (for valves and arm screws)
  • Supplied screws or through-bolts
  • Safety glasses and gloves
Pro tip: Confirm door hand (RH/LH) and print template at 100% scale before drilling.

Step 1: Position & Mark the Template

  1. Align the template on the frame header and top rail of the door.
  2. Mark all screw holes and the spindle location carefully.
  3. Double-check alignment to ensure smooth closer operation.

Step 2: Drill Pilot Holes

  1. Drill the header holes for the closer body per the template.
  2. Drill the door top-rail holes for the arm shoe. Use through-bolts if rail thickness requires it.

Step 3: Mount the Closer Body

  1. Secure the closer body to the header using all supplied screws.
  2. Orient the valve side outward for easy adjustment access.

Step 4: Install the Arm Shoe & Main Arm

  1. Attach the arm shoe to the Rebco top rail at the template marks.
  2. Place the main arm onto the spindle at the indexed angle (often ~90° to the door line).
  3. Connect the arm into the shoe and tighten securely.

Step 5: Test Door Swing

  1. Open and close the door multiple times.
  2. Check that the arm clears the frame and stop.
  3. If sweep feels off, adjust the arm preload as needed.

Step 6: Adjust the Closer Valves

  • Sweep speed: Controls the main swing from full open to about 15° before latch.
  • Latch speed: Controls the last 10–15° for positive latch without slamming.
  • Backcheck (if equipped): Cushions the door before it reaches full open.
Adjustment tip: Turn valves in small 1/8–1/4 increments and retest until the door closes smoothly and ADA compliant.

Step 7: Final Checks

  • Verify the door latches securely without a hard slam.
  • Confirm all screws and bolts are tight.
  • Inspect weatherseal and clearances for even compression.
