How to Replace a Storefront Door Bottom Sweep (Brush & Vinyl)

Hey guys, this is Gary with Door Closers USA. Today I’m going to show youhow to replace and install a storefront door bottom sweep.

In this example, we’re working on a pair of storefront doors that usebrush-style door sweeps. These are very common on aluminum storefront doorsbecause they’re flexible, durable, and long-lasting.

Types of Storefront Door Bottom Sweeps

Storefront doors typically use one of two sweep styles:

• Brush sweeps – Flexible bristles that last a long time and adjust easily
• Vinyl sweeps – Provide a tighter seal but wear faster and require careful adjustment

Brush sweeps are often preferred because they tolerate uneven thresholds and minor door movement.Vinyl sweeps can work well but may create friction if installed too tightly.

Concealed vs. Surface-Mount Door Sweeps

The sweep shown here is a concealed fastener model.All mounting screws are hidden behind an aluminum cover plate, giving the doora cleaner, more finished appearance.

We also carry surface-mount door sweeps with exposed fasteners.Those are quicker to install and commonly found in the field—it just depends on the look you prefer.

These sweeps are available in:

• Clear anodized (aluminum finish)
• Dark bronze anodized

Understanding Storefront Door Gaps

Most storefront doors are undercut from the factory.For example, on a standard 3070 storefront door:

• Frame opening height: 84 in
• Door height: approximately 83-3/16 in to 83-1/8 in

That difference creates a gap at the bottom of the door.A standard 1/2 in threshold reduces the gap, but there is still space underneath.That’s exactly what the bottom sweep is designed to seal.

If your door does not have a threshold, selecting the correctbristle or vinyl length becomes even more important.

Removing a Concealed Fastener Door Sweep

To remove this style of door sweep:

1. Carefully pop off the aluminum cover plate
2. Take care not to bend the aluminum extrusion

Once the cover plate is removed, you’ll see the mounting screws underneath.These sweeps typically use self-tapping screws that fasten directly into aluminum.

Remove all screws and slide the sweep off the bottom rail.

Adjusting and Positioning the Door Sweep

Most storefront door sweeps have slotted mounting holes.This allows you to raise or lower the sweep slightly after installation.

With brush sweeps, you can let the bristles lightly touch the threshold.With vinyl sweeps, avoid excessive pressure to prevent friction and premature wear.

If you are installing a sweep on a door that never had one:

• Measure the largest gap under the door
• Select a sweep with bristles or vinyl long enough to seal that gap

Trimming Storefront Door Sweeps to Width

Storefront door sweeps are supplied in standard sizes.For example:

• A 3070 door uses a 36 in sweep
• The actual door width is typically 35-3/4 in

Because of this, the sweep must be trimmed slightly shorter than the door width.The aluminum holder cuts easily using a hacksaw.

Trim the sweep so it fits cleanly between the door stiles without rubbing.

Installing the Door Sweep

To install or reinstall the sweep:

1. Position the sweep so the bristles or vinyl touch the threshold
2. Mark or align mounting holes
3. Install the self-tapping screws
4. Adjust height using the slotted holes if needed

If using a concealed fastener model, snap the aluminum cover plate back into place.Hook the bottom edge first, then work upward until it fully clicks in.A rubber mallet can help if needed.

Why Door Sweeps Matter

Bottom sweeps provide several important benefits:

• Keep insects and pests out of the building
• Block wind, dust, and debris
• Improve energy efficiency
• Provide a finished look at the door base

Even small gaps can allow pests or air infiltration, making door sweeps a simple but valuable upgrade.
