How to Replace a Storefront Door Lock Indicator (ADA Compliant)

Hey guys, this is Gary with Door Closers USA. Today I’m going to show you how toreplace a storefront door lock indicator. If you’re in a region that requiresthis for ADA compliance—such as Washington, Oregon, Idaho, or California—chances are yourdoor already has one installed. Even if it’s not required where you are, it’s still a great upgradeto have.

What a Lock Indicator Does

A lock indicator is a simple visual device mounted on the interior side of the door thatshows whether the deadbolt is locked or unlocked.

  • When the deadbolt is unlocked, the indicator shows OPEN (or unlocked).
  • When the deadbolt is locked, the indicator flips to show LOCKED.

It’s a straightforward way to tell the lock status at a glance.

Common Signs Your Lock Indicator Needs Replacement

Inside the indicator is a plastic flip/slide mechanism that moves up and down.Over time, that plastic can wear out.

If you notice the indicator is not staying in position—such as sliding down or not holding the“open” or “locked” display—then it’s usually time to replace it.

How to Remove the Existing Lock Indicator

Removal is simple:

  1. Remove the two Phillips screws on the faceplate.
  2. Carefully pull the indicator off the door.

Once it’s off, you’ll see the slide mechanism and the pin assembly that interfaces with the deadlock.

How the Lock Indicator Works

The indicator uses a small pin that rides inside the indicator’s internal slots. That pin is connected to the deadbolt’s movement.

As you rotate the key and the deadbolt moves, the pin travels up and down, causing the indicator toflip between “locked” and “open.”

Replacing the Lock Indicator Using the Door Closers USA Kit

We offer a replacement lock indicator kit available at DoorClosersUSA.com.Kits are typically available in:

  • Silver / aluminum finish
  • Dark bronze finish

Each kit also includes the compliance sticker:“These doors to remain unlocked whenever the building is occupied.”This sticker is typically mounted at the top of the door frame when required by code.

Step 1: Replace the Internal Mechanism (If Needed)

You can remove the internal component and reuse it if you want, but the kit includes a new one.Simply pull the old mechanism out and insert the new piece, making sure it is fully seated.

Step 2: Align the Indicator Before Reinstalling

Before mounting the indicator back on, confirm the door is currently unlocked. You want the indicator positioned so it displays the correct status once installed.

Depending on the door prep, you may need to “rock” the indicator slightly to get it past the extrusion. If your door does not have that obstruction, installation is even easier.

Step 3: Install the Indicator and Fasten It

Slide the indicator into place and reinstall the two screws. The kit includes new screws, but you can reuse the originals if needed.

Test the Lock Indicator

After installation, always test operation:

  • Verify it shows OPEN when unlocked
  • Lock the deadbolt and confirm it flips to LOCKED
  • Unlock again to confirm smooth movement

Once it’s working properly, your door is back up to compliance and the indicator will reliably displaylock status.

Final Notes

This is a simple replacement that can restore reliability and help maintain compliance. Many of ourAlumitrex™ 88 doors include this feature, and it’s a good standard to have—especially if requirementsexpand to additional regions over time.
