How to Replace a Storefront Hookbolt Lock with a Deadlatch Lock

Hey everyone, this is Gary with Door Closers USA. In today’s video, I’ll show you how toreplace a storefront hookbolt lock with a storefront deadlatch lock. This is a direct replacement commonly used on narrow stile aluminum storefront doors.

Hookbolt locks are often installed with key cylinders on both sides, or with a key on the exteriorand a thumb turn on the interior. Over time, hookbolts can wear, bind, or stop aligning properly.A deadlatch provides smoother operation and improved long-term reliability for daily use.

Step 1: Remove the Existing Hookbolt Lock

Start by removing the faceplate on the edge of the door.

  • Remove the three screws holding the faceplate
  • Pull the faceplate off and set it aside

With the faceplate removed, you’ll see two set screws inside the lock body. These set screws secure the lock cylinders or thumb turn.

  • Loosen the set screws (do not remove them completely)
  • Unthread and remove the interior and exterior cylinders or thumb turn

Next, remove the top and bottom mounting screws that hold the hookbolt lock body in the door stile.Carefully slide the hookbolt lock out of the door.

Step 2: Install the Deadlatch Lock Body

Insert the storefront deadlatch lock body into the existing door prep. This is a direct-fit replacement for the hookbolt lock.

  • Align the deadlatch body in the door stile
  • Secure it using the top and bottom mounting screws

Step 3: Install Binder Posts and Cam Plug

Using the supplied template, install the binder posts spaced 3 in apart. These posts will secure the paddle handle assembly.

Next, thread the cam plug (supplied with the paddle handle) directly into the deadlatch body.Once aligned, tighten the set screw in the deadlatch body to lock the cam plug in place.

Step 4: Install the Paddle Handle Assembly

Install the escutcheon assembly onto the binder posts and secure it with the two mounting screws.

To install the paddle:

  • Align the drive ears on the paddle with the slot in the drive plate
  • Insert the pivot pin
  • Install the pivot pin set screw and tighten it flush with the bottom of the escutcheon

Step 5: Install the Exterior Lock Cylinder

Thread the exterior key cylinder into the deadlatch body.Once fully seated, tighten the set screw inside the lock body to secure the cylinder in place.

Step 6: Install the Deadlatch Strike

Close the door and mark the centerline of the latch.Install the supplied deadlatch strike plate on the frame.

Depending on the frame, you may need to file or cut the opening slightly to ensure proper latchengagement.

Final Testing

Test the lock operation from both sides of the door:

  • The paddle should retract the latch smoothly
  • The latch should engage the strike cleanly
  • The exterior key cylinder should lock and unlock without binding

A properly installed deadlatch will provide smoother, more reliable operation than a worn hookbolt.
