Types Of Weatherstripping On A Storefront Door

Commercial Aluminum Storefront Door Weatherstripping Types

Storefront doors get their name because they are the front entry doors to commercial buildings. If you've ever shopped at a retail store, gas station, or even visited a bank, you have passed through a storefront doors. As front entrance doors, they keep the building secure and prevent wind, dirt, debris from entering the building. One of the main barriers on a storefront door that helps prevent these particular items from entering the building is the weatherstripping. Commercial storefront doors come with a variety of weatherstripping types. Some weatherstripping may come standard with storefront doors, however like everything else, many weatherstripping options are additional cost, and your storefront door may not have them. Always know that weatherstripping can be added to your storefront door to better improve the insulation performance. Just because your storefront door does not have one of the types of weatherstripping products listed below, does not mean you cannot purchase it and add it to your door. In this article we will explain the various types of weatherstripping products used on commercial aluminum storefront doors.

Pile Weatherstripping

Pile weatherstripping is the most popular type of weatherstripping on aluminum storefront doors. Pile weatherstripping typically runs down the lock and pivot hinge stile of the door through a small channel. Most storefront doors come standard with pile weatherstripping. Due to the location of the pile weatherstripping, it is quite common for the weatherstripping to be damaged. When pedestrians swing open the storefront doors, the leading edge of the storefront door sometimes rubs against the pedestrian, a shopping bag, a purse, etc. This often wears down sections of the pile weatherstripping over time.

Bottom Door Sweep

A bottom door sweep is a type of vinyl or brush that is mounted at the bottom rail of the storefront door. It functions to keep bugs, wind, and debris from entering at the bottom of the door. Bottom door sweeps are sometimes included in storefront doors, but typically are an additional cost. For this reason, many storefront doors do not have door sweeps. If your storefront door does not have one, we highly recommend purchasing door sweep designed for storefront doors, as this will greatly help insulate your front door. Be aware that there other bottom door sweeps on the market sold by big box stores. The majority of these door sweeps are only designed for light use on residential home doors. If installed on commercial doors the high frequency and use of the door will result in the bristles of the door sweep to come out within weeks of use. If you need a storefront door bottom sweep, we recommend the Tahoma door sweep, as it is designed solely for use on storefront aluminum doors.

Door Frame Weatherstripping

Some storefront doors feature additional weatherstripping that is installed on the inside perimeter of the door frame. This weatherstripping is an an angled brush sweep. It provides a firm seal between the door and frame. Door frame weatherstripping provides great insulation all around the door frame. Storefront doors with door frame weatherstripping are often front entrance doors that experience wind drafts through the gaps between the door and frame. By installing door frame weatherstripping it eliminates any air gap around the door and frame.

Door Astragal Weathestripping

A door astragal is a type of weatherstripping used on storefront door pairs. It is designed to eliminate the gap between the two doors. Door astragals are very important on storefront door pairs, because without them, a tremendous amount of cold air can rush into the building through the gap during the winter, or hot air during the summer.
