Why Are Hollow Metal Doors Hollow?

Why Are Hollow Metal Doors Hollow?

One of the most common questions we hear from customers new to commercial doors is:“I need a metal door, but I don’t want it to be hollow.”

The confusion comes from the term “hollow metal door.”Despite the name, commercial hollow metal doors are not empty inside. In fact, they are insulated steel doors designed for strength, durability, and compatibility with commercial hardware.

What Does “Hollow Metal” Actually Mean?

The term hollow metal refers to the construction method, not the absence of insulation.

Hollow metal doors are manufactured using formed sheets of steelthat create a rigid outer shell. Inside that steel shell is aninsulated core that adds strength, thermal resistance, sound control, and fire performance depending on the application.

In other words, when a contractor specifies a hollow metal door, they are describing an insulated steel door assembly suitable for commercial use.

Common Hollow Metal Door Core Types

All commercial hollow metal doors include a core. The core type affects cost, performance, and code compliance.

  • Honeycomb core – Lightweight and cost-effective. Common in standard commercial applications where fire rating or high insulation is not required.
  • Polystyrene core – Higher strength-to-weight ratio, improved thermal performance, and better sound control. Common in higher-quality commercial doors.
  • Mineral core – Used in fire-rated hollow metal doorsto meet UL and NFPA requirements.

Hollow Metal vs Hollow Core Doors

Hollow metal doors are often confused with hollow core doors, but they are very different products.

Hollow core doors are typically residential interior wood doors. They are made from thin wood skins with an empty or minimal internal structure. These doors are not designed for heavy use, security hardware, or fire ratings.

Hollow metal doors, on the other hand, are constructed from steel sheets and filled with an engineered core. They are designed forcommercial buildings, high-traffic openings, fire-rated assemblies, and security applications.

Why Hollow Metal Doors Are Used in Commercial Buildings

  • Accept commercial locks, panic hardware, closers, and access control
  • Available in fire-rated assemblies up to 3 hours
  • Durable steel construction for high-traffic environments
  • Consistent sizing and compatibility with steel frames
  • Long service life with minimal maintenance

Choosing the Right Hollow Metal Door

Selecting the correct hollow metal door depends on the opening location, required fire rating, wall type, and hardware needs.
