Fire Ratings & Code Basics
Fire rated doors are part of a tested assembly (door + frame + hardware) designed to slow the spread of fire and smoke. The fire rating required is usually determined by the wall rating, building use, occupancy type, and the location of the opening (e.g., corridor, stairwell, mechanical room, or fire barrier).
- 20 minutes: often used in smoke and draft control applications when permitted by code
- 45 to 60 minutes: common in corridors and rated partitions
- 90 minutes: common for stairwells and higher hazard separations
- 180 minutes: typically used for fire walls and high-rated separations

Fire Rated Frames & Wall Types
Fire rated doors must be installed with a compatible fire rated frame and the correct anchors for the wall type. Choose frames based on your wall condition and whether the opening is new construction or retrofit.
For anchors and install references: Hollow Metal Door Anchor Types and Hollow Metal Door Resources.
Fire Rated Hardware Compatibility
Hardware in fire rated openings must be approved for that application. Door closers are often required, and hardware selection must match the rating and use of the opening. If you are unsure what hardware is allowed, contact us and we can help you confirm the right setup.
