How Do I Hang A Metal Door?

How To Properly Hang A Hollow Metal Door

A metal door also referred to as a hollow metal door or steel door is commonly used as rear exit doors on all commercial buildings. In this guide we explain step by step how to hang a hollow metal door.

Step 1: Make Sure The Door Frame Is Plumb

Before any metal door can be hung, be sure that the door frame is properly plumb. Use a level and place it on the door frame head (top of door frame), door frame hinge side, and door frame lock side. If the door frame is not plumb or level, then it should be shimmed and adjusted before hanging a metal door.

Step 2: Install Hinges On Metal Door

The next step is to install hinges on the metal door. We recommend installing ball bearing hinges on metal doors. Hollow metal doors are constructed of steel, using plain bearing hinges will wear out or sag, since the doors are so heavy. Using heavy duty ball bearing hinges will insure that the weight of the door will be supported. All commercial grade hollow metal doors use 4.5” x 4.5” hinges.

We recommend installing brand new American Choice ball bearing door hinges since they are heavy duty and feature high quality ball bearings designed for hollow metal doors. With new American Choice ball bearing hinges installed on the door, you will eliminate the door from sagging on the frame.

Step 3: Set Door In Place

The next step is to set the door next to the frame, so that the hinges are lined up with the hinge locations on the door frame. Shims can be placed under the door, to support the door and properly line the hinges up with the door frame. Step 4: Attach Hinges To Door FrameAttach the door hinges to the door frame. Check the operation of the door. The door should swing open and closed easily with little resistance. If the door rubs on the frame, some adjustment will be needed. In some cases hinge shims are needed, however, in most cases the door will only rub on the frame if the door frame is not plumb or if the hinge preps are worn out.

Conclusion

The most important factor to hanging metal doors is to make sure the door frame is plumb. An out of level door frame will cause a hung door to rub on the door frame. If you need high quality hollow metal doors or frames we recommend Patriot hollow metal doors and frames. Manufactured in the USA, these hollow metal doors are high quality and are trusted by building owners nation wide.
