Video - How to Hang a Hollow Metal Door

This video demonstrates proper hinge alignment, door support, and final adjustment techniques. The concepts shown apply to most commercial hollow metal door installations.

Step 1: Make Sure The Door Frame Is Plumb

Before hanging any steel door, the door frame must be plumb, level, and square.Use a level on:

  • The frame head (top)
  • The hinge jamb
  • The strike jamb

If the frame is not plumb or level, the door will rub, bind, or fail to latch properly.Shim and correct the frame before proceeding.

Step 2: Install Hinges On The Metal Door

Hollow metal doors are heavy and require ball bearing hinges.Plain bearing hinges will wear out quickly and cause sagging.

Most commercial hollow metal doors are prepped for4.5" x 4.5" heavy-duty ball bearing hinges.

4.5 x 4.5 Ball Bearing Hinges

We recommend using heavy-duty ball bearing hingesdesigned for steel doors.Proper hinges eliminate premature sagging and extend the life of the door and frame.

Step 3: Set Door In Place

Position the door next to the frame and align the hinges with the hinge preps in the frame.Use wood shims or blocks under the door to support the weight and maintain proper height.

Correct door support during this step prevents hinge stress and misalignment.

Step 4: Attach Hinges To Door Frame

Fasten the hinges to the door frame and test door operation. The door should swing freely and close without rubbing.

If rubbing occurs, check:

  • Frame plumb and level
  • Hinge alignment
  • Existing hinge wear or damaged preps

Hinge shims may be used if necessary, but rubbing usually indicates a frame alignment issue.
