Intermediate pivot hinges are typically used on storefront doors taller than 6'-8" or 7'-0". It is very common for storefront doors that 8'-0" in height to have one intermediate pivot. The general rule of thumb is doors up to 90" in height can use one intermediate pivot. An intermediate pivot can then be used for each additional 30" in storefront door height.
