Fire Rated Hollow Metal Door Pairs

A fire rated hollow metal door pair are two steel doors with insulated cores that has been tested to withstand fire for a given period of time. Fire rated hollow metal door pairs are available with 3 hour, 1-1/2 hour, 1 hour, 45 minutes, or 20 minute labels. Fire rated hollow metal door pairs offer a wider net door opening than single fire rated doors. If a wall is fire rated, the hollow metal door must be fire rated too.

  • Heavy duty 18 Gauge steel is standard. 16 and 20 gauge is also available.
  • Insulated polystyrene core is standard (R-Value 7.14, U-Value 0.14). Honeycomb, steel stiffened, or polyurethane cores available.

Fire Rated Hollow Metal Door Pair Configurations

Fire rated hollow metal door pairs come in 5 basic handing configurtions: left hand reverse active, right hand reverse active, left hand active, right hand active, both door panels active. The chart below shows the common louvered hollow metal door pair configurations.

Fire Labels

Fire rated hollow metal doors are classified by a fire label. The fire label is located on the hinge side of the door, and denotes how long the door can withstand a fire. The classification is in minutes and can be either 20 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, or 180 minutes. The illustration below shows the various fire labels.

Fire rated hollow metal door pairs typically consist of an active door panel and an inactive door panel. Common preps for the fire rated active door panel include:
  • 161 Lock or Deadbolt Prep (Bored Lock Hole with 2-3/4" backset for use with any commercial cylindrical lock)
  • 86 Mortise Edge Prep (Mortise pocket for use with any commercial mortise lock. Face prep by installer)
  • Blank Lock (No Bored Hole)
  • RPD Rim Panic Prep (Reinforced prep designed for mounting a rim panic exit device on face of door)
Common preps for the fire rated inactive door panel include:
  • ASA Strike Prep (Strike prep on inactive door panel)
  • Flush Bolt Prep (Top and Bottom Flush bolt prep on inactive door panel)
